The Atlanta Falcons’ Sunday night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers went from disappointing to worrisome as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. appeared to suffer multiple low hits late in the game, forcing a trip to the sideline medical tent. Despite finishing the game, questions about his health now loom large as the team prepares for Week 8.
Penix, who completed 21 of 38 passes for 241 yards with one touchdown and a lost fumble, struggled under constant pressure from the 49ers defense. Though sacked only twice, he was pressured on 26 percent of his dropbacks and failed to complete a single pass on nine attempts under duress, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Late in the fourth quarter, while trying to mount a comeback, Penix went down awkwardly after another hit and was seen limping. Moments later, NBC’s broadcast showed him entering the medical tent for evaluation.
Head coach Raheem Morris addressed the situation after the game, saying the team would need further evaluation before determining the severity of any injury. “He gave me the thumbs up on the sideline when we were asking him, so he was OK to finish,” Morris told reporters. “We’ll see where he is tomorrow.” While Morris downplayed the immediate concern, he did acknowledge that Penix had been playing through what appeared to be a leg issue that affected his mobility and performance.
Falcons’ Momentum Crumbles After Promising Start
The Falcons’ 20 to 10 loss to San Francisco brought them back to an even 3–3 record after last week’s high-profile Monday night win over the Buffalo Bills. Many expected Atlanta to carry that momentum forward, but the offense once again faltered. The Falcons scored just ten points, their second-lowest total of the season, and struggled to establish rhythm or consistency.

Much of the criticism has centered around Penix’s uneven play. The rookie quarterback showed flashes of his college promise but also moments of inexperience. One costly example came late in the first half, when he was flagged for intentional grounding inside the 49ers’ 25-yard line. The penalty triggered a 10-second runoff that ended the half, eliminating a chance for Atlanta to score before the break. The Falcons had just used their final timeout, leaving them no way to stop the clock.
Falcons writer Will McFadden summed up the moment best: “That intentional grounding was a reminder that Michael Penix Jr. is still very comparable to a rookie QB in terms of NFL experience. It’s something he should learn from. Can’t put that on anyone else.”
Even Morris admitted there was confusion over whether a second should have remained on the clock, but he emphasized that the mistake was part of a larger learning process for both Penix and the team.
Questions Loom Over Penix’s Health and Future Role
With only nine career starts, Penix remains in the early stages of his professional development. His composure, decision-making, and ability to handle pressure will continue to be tested as defenses adapt to his style. Yet now, his durability may also come under scrutiny.

Should Penix be unable to play in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins, veteran Kirk Cousins is expected to take over the starting role. Cousins, who began the season as the backup, remains a steady option if Penix’s injury proves more serious than initially believed.

For Atlanta, Sunday’s defeat served as both a humbling reminder of their inconsistencies and a potential turning point in their season. Whether the focus shifts to a quarterback controversy or an injury concern, one thing is clear: the Falcons’ search for stability under center continues.
